swamp.lost

Pal Klusacek & Malcolm Schmidt

swamp.lost is a ludic media-art installation that invites players into the Death Internet Swamp: a metaphorical landscape shaped by AI-generated content, bots, synthetic voices, and the gradual erosion of trust in digital spaces.

The project translates the lived experience of online disorientation into an interactive environment. swamp.lost makes this condition tangible: players move through uncertainty, encounter ambiguous signals, and must decide which forms of communication still feel believable.

Drawing on the Dead Internet Theory and the folkloric myth of the Irrlichter — will-o’-the-wisps that appear as deceptive lights in marshlands — the installation reimagines these ghostly guides for the post-digital present. In folklore, Irrlichter lure travellers away from safe paths. In swamp.lost, they become figures of contemporary digital ambiguity: signals that may guide, mislead, imitate, or manipulate.

Players interact with the Irrlichter through light and rhythm. Each encounter opens a small act of interpretation: Can this signal be trusted?

After engaging with multiple Irrlichter, players must choose which one they trust enough to follow. This choice is not simply about finding the “right” answer, but about becoming aware of how trust is produced under unstable conditions. At its core, swamp.lost asks: How do we orient ourselves in a collapsing information ecology?

By extending current technological and cultural developments into an embodied game structure, the project turns this question into a bodily and affective experience. It invites players to rehearse new forms of orientation, doubt, trust, and sense-making within uncertainty.

Welcome to the swamp, where every light might be a guide, a trap, or something in between.
